The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said its officers in St Ann have taken two parents into custody as they commence a probe into the death of a three-year-old girl, whose body has a number of bruises and swelling.

The child, Athena Forbes, from Bogue Village in Montego Bay, St James, died at St Ann’s Bay Hospital on Saturday, February 16.

The JCF said: “Reports from the St Ann’s Bay Police are that, about 7:10pm on Saturday, young Athena was in the company of her parents travelling from Montego Bay en route to Portland.

“It is alleged that she fell ill whilst travelling and was taken to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital. While being medically examined, she was observed to have bruises and swelling on her body, and the police were notified. She subsequently succumbed and her body removed to the morgue for post mortem,” added the JCF.

Investigators probing the matter said the parents are in custody for questioning.
