It was not an easy road for Jovaine Williams, who was 10 years old when his mother Anisha Thomas passed away.
His father Kelly Andre Williams lives abroad, and so he grew up with his aunts Shanagay and Danamay Williams.
The youngster, who hails from Angels in Spanish Town, St Catherine, attended Eltham High, a so-called non-traditional school on the outskirts of the old capital.
Williams has enrolled at St Catherine High School sixth form having passed the eight CSEC subjects he sat this year.
He wants to motivate other students at ‘non-traditional’ high schools, which are sometimes frowned on.
“I want to encourage them to accept that it’s not where you go in terms of school, but what you work to achieve,” he advised.
Preliminary results from the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) show that the Eltham Park Primary past-student achieved the following:
English A – Grade One
Information Technology – Grade One
Mathematics – Grade Two
Social Studies – Grade Two
Principles of Accounts – Grade One
Principles of Business – Grade One
Textiles, Clothing and Fashion Technical – Grade Two
Office Administration – Grade One
Grades One to Three are passes, with Grade One being the highest.
Although Williams did not attain all Grade Ones, he is elated to be numbered among achievers.
“I am super excited to know that my hard work has finally paid off,” he told The Beacon, adding that English A was his biggest challenge. He actually hated it.
“But I was determined to pass it, and I achieved a Grade One in it,” said the immediate past President of the Culture Club at his school.
He expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to his success – especially teachers at Eltham High.
Williams is now forging ahead to fulfil his big dreams. He wants to attain a degree in Accounts, and to eventually become a bank owner, accountant, or an auditor.
