Relatives and friends will gather on Monday, 29 July 2024, to pay their last respect to 39-year-old public school teacher Cassandra Rigg, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies during a brief period of illness.

When she passed away on June 22, she was a teacher at Jericho Primary School in her native Linstead, St Catherine and was on the verge of tying the knot with her England-based fiance’.

In the days leading up to her death, the teacher was diagnosed with brain tumor.

The service of thanksgiving for her life will commence 10AM on July 29 at the Power Of Faith Ministries on Church Road in Bog Walk, St Catherine. Interment will follow at Commodore Cemetery in Linstead.

Ahead of the thanksgiving service, a set-up will take place on Saturday, July 27 at Natty Farm Yard in Treadways district, Linstead where the late Rigg lived with her mom Deloris McCarthy.

In a June interview, the then crying mother told The Beacon: “It was 39 wonderful years with my daughter; she was a blessing; she was a blessing to everyone.”

Rigg attended Linstead Primary School, Charlemont High and Moneague College where her only child – a son – is now enrolled.

Her passing brings back memories of her being rescued from a house fire in Linstead when she was two years old. She suffered third-degree burns on different parts of her body and ended up spending almost seven years at Bustamante Hospital For Children.

“She did not let her scars [resulting from the burns] stop her. Sometimes I wonder how she did it, but she did; she didn’t watch what nobody want to say,” said one of Rigg’s sisters, Marva Clarke.

The school where the late educator was enrolled for nearly four years, Jericho Primary, hosted a memorial service in her memory. Ahead of that event, the institution’s principal, Fabian Facey-James, spoke glowingly of Rigg during the school’s graduation ceremony.

“I can say without reservation that Cassandra Rigg has made an impact by doing the best she could with the resources that she had at her disposal,” the principal said. “She was someone who would always seek solutions to problems. It is therefore a very sad experience for us as a staff as we grapple with the loss of our colleague.”
