I will rebuild my life | Warren quits top public job 25 years after drug conviction

July 26, 2018 0 By Horace Mills

Carolyn Warren has resigned as Managing Director of the state-owned National Energy Solutions Limited (NESOL) amid controversy over recently disclosed information that she was convicted of a drug offence 25 years ago.

Opposition Spokesman on Energy Phillip Paulwell recently made the disclosure while he called for her to be fired.

He later withdrew the call amid outrage from sections of the society, who said Warren should not be condemned for a lifetime.

Following the disclosure, Warren, on July 12, confessed that she had a drug conviction in 1995, adding that she did not serve prison time.

She also apologized for not making the disclosure prior to being appointed at NESOL.

Warren, who was appointed in 2016 while the embattled Dr Andrew Wheatley was energy minister, issued a statement today saying she decided to resign as a result of the controversy.

Here is the FULL STATEMENT:

I have taken note of recent vicious attacks on my family and I, even subsequent to my admission of my mistake over two decades ago, and evidence of demonstrable efforts I have made to turn my life around and contribute positively to my country.

The sustained, and in many cases spurious attacks via both social and electronic media, have taken a tremendous toll on my family and I. Many claims made are untrue.

However, this issue has now cast a cloud around the good work which has been taking place at the National Energy Solutions, NESOL.

Consequently, to avoid prolonging this unfortunate and deeply painful situation, on July 25, 2018, I submitted my resignation as Managing Director at NESOL.

With the help of God, I will rebuild my life.

I again urge people not only in Jamaica but across the world who have infringed or made mistakes in the past, not to give up despite the trying circumstances which may prevail regardless of tangible efforts they may have made to become a good citizen and contribute positively to their country.

I wish to thank the Board for having afforded me the opportunity to serve and extend gratitude to my friends and family who have stood by me in this trying time.
