Highway is not parish council road | Sinclair scoffs at PNP resolution
June 6, 2018A veteran lawyer and former Chairman of the St James Municipal Corporation Charles Sinclair has scoffed at a decision by some St Catherine councillors to pass a resolution for a section of the North South Highway to be named after former Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller.
The resolution, which was passed by 14 votes to 13, was pushed by councilors of the opposition People’s National Party (PNP), which Simpson-Miller served as president.
Mayor in charge of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation Norman Scott, after the resolution, said immediate steps will be taken to have a section of the highway named the Portia Simpson-Miller Highway.
That section runs from Mandela Highway in St Catherine to the border with St Ann.
But Sinclair, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for Montego Bay North-East, said there is little value to the resolution passed in St Catherine.
“I can only surmise that the mayor and councillors don’t appreciate that this road is not a parish council road, hence there is little value in that resolution,” he wrote in response to a Jamaica Beacon story.
Sinclair also questioned the timing of the resolution. “If it was an original thought [of the PNP councillors], why wait until the eve of the ceremony to rename the roadway Edward Seaga Highway to make the resolution? Clearly an attempt to stir controversy!” he said.
The PNP has been seeking to have a section of the highway named in honour of Mrs Simpson-Miller after the JLP government indicated that the entire roadway will be named after former Prime Minister Edward Seaga of the JLP.
