94-year-old spends days without bed in public hospital

A Justice of the Peace from the Lluidas Vale area of St Catherine yesterday expressed outrage over what she described as the poor treatment that was being meted out to her 94-year-old uncle at Spanish Town Hospital.

She, in an initial social media post, said:

My critically ill uncle has been in the Accident and Emergency area of the Spanish Town [Hospital] for over 48 hours now.

He is bleeding; his blood pressure is very low; his blood count is very low; and he has been sitting in a wheelchair because they say there is no bed.

Jamaica, this is a crying shame. My uncle is 94 years old. How can anyone so ill be treated like this. Spanish Town Hospital, do better.

Justice of the Peace

That post on the Justice of the Peace’s social media page was subsequently deleted and, this evening, replaced with the following:

We just want to say a big big thank you to all our friends who cared, shared and helped us in getting our uncle a bed in the hospital.

Just to let you all know that he is now comfortably recovering.

Thanks a million to you all, and we really really appreciate your assistance. God bless you all.

Justice of the Peace

While that matter has been resolved, it strikes at the heart of a chronic shortage of beds at hospitals across the island where many elderly people are forced to sleep in wheelchairs or on benches sometimes for a full week.
