Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigations Branch, McArthur Sutherland, has commended detectives for making a breakthrough in the case of an elderly woman who was murdered in St Ann last month.

Police reported that they have charged 19-year-old Oral Redway from St Ann and Westmoreland with the murder of 74-year-old Peggie Aljoe, a retiree from Bridgewater district in Discovery Bay, St Ann.

The woman’s body, with several wounds, was discovered on October 25 in her yard.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said its officers arrested Redway during an operation on November 22, when investigations led detectives to Townhead district in Westmoreland.

“As the probe progressed, the emerging investigative leads were processed and promptly acted on. Other operations were conducted in Westmoreland and St Ann in search of additional items of evidentiary value, particularly scientific evidence for analysis,” the JCF further said.

It added: “During a formal interview in the presence of his attorney, the suspect reportedly confessed to the brutal crime and was charged on Friday, November 23, with murder. He is also facing additional charges.”

The JCF said Redway is to appear before the St Ann Criminal Court on Thursday, November 29, to answer to the charges.

Meanwhile, Acting Assistant Commissioner Sutherland said: “The relentless effort of the detectives to track down and arrest this suspect with evidence and achieve yet another critical breakthrough in a major criminal investigation is indeed commendable.

“It reinforces an important message to potential criminals that they will be pursued and arrested by our investigators, who are trained and prepared to take on the challenges,” the senior cop further said.
