St Ann youth with 9 CXC subjects takes on regional leadershipNovember 13, 2019
Bobby Francis, Head Boy at York Castle High School in St Ann, has been having a terrific year.
He did not only attain Grade One – the highest grade possible, in nine CSEC subjects.
The youth leadership master, in August, also became Governor of the Junior Optimist Octagon International Caribbean District, which is a youth service organization affiliated with Optimist International.
Francis, in effect, is now overseeing junior Optimist service clubs scattered across the islands of Antigua, Jamaica, Barbados, and Anguilla.
He said the regional appointment is his ‘most honoured ascension’ yet.
“Leading youths into service to other youths encapsulates my passion,” Francis told The Beacon, adding that one has to be outstanding in youth leadership to cop the regional top post.
The youngster, who is gearing up to travel to Barbados on regional duties, has his hands virtually full of leadership roles here at home.
He is Chairman of the Students Council of York Castle High School, Head Boy – as stated earlier, Assistant Vice President of the National Secondary Students Council (Region Three), and Coordinator (Region Three) of the newly developing Jamaica Millennium Vision for Youth – associated with the government’s Vision 2030 agenda.
Francis, in the meantime, was re-elected this month to serve a second consecutive term as Youth Mayor of St Ann.
“It’s truly a blessing to have been considered for this position once again. It shows that the people love the propositions and are ready to continue on the journey of translating vision into reality,” he said.
Francis, an aspiring politician, told The Beacon that he will continue to build on the platform established in his first year as Youth Mayor.
Reflecting on the first year, he explained that he, among other things, represented the St Ann Municipal Corporation on diplomatic occasions, and engaged in national discussions about issues affecting young people.
Francis added: “My first term was an invaluable experience – a greater recognition of civic affairs and youth leadership… We engaged the bridging of the gap between youths and politics; we also attempted engaging youths on mental health awareness.
“This year, we plan to continue the charge on youths engaging the political platform, and join the heated discussion on climate change. I also aim to sophisticate the operations of the Youth Council,” the Youth Mayor further said.
