Principal of Rousseau Primary in St Andrew Owen Speid, who recently blasted the government for its “indecent haste” in implementing the National Standards Curriculum and its accompanying Primary Exit Profile, will eventually become President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA).
He triumphed over three other candidates in presidential elections held from June 18 to 22.
Speid, whose title is now President Elect Designate, will officially be proclaimed at the opening of the JTA’s Annual Conference to be held in Montego Bay in August.
The other candidates who vied for the top job were Principal of Louise Bennett Coverly All Age in St Andrew Wayne Mullings, Acting Principal of Porus High in Manchester David Powell, and Principal of Manchester High Jasford Gabriel.
The JTA, in a statement overnight, said a total of 12,763 votes were cast in the elections, with candidates receiving votes as follows:
Owen Speid: 4,003 votes
Jasford Gabriel: 3,193 votes
Wayne Mullings: 2,258 votes
David Powell: 1,836 votes
Meanwhile, it is not the first time that both Mullings and Speid are seeing the JTA’s top job. They were unsuccessful in their respective bids last year when Garth Anderson won.
