The People’s National Party (PNP) is sending economist Dr Andre Haughton to represent the organization in St James West Central, where Marlene Malahoo-Forte of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has been Member of Parliament since the 2016 general election.
During its National Executive Council meeting in St James yesterday, the PNP presented Dr Haughton, who also is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of the West Indies.
It said: “Dr Andre Haughton is more than a scholar and educator; he is an entrepreneur, a writer, a marketer, a community worker and a man who is on a mission to build a better Jamaica.”
“Dr Andre Haughton aspires to uplift the constituency of St James West Central through social and economic empowerment, and ensure improvement in the quality of life of the people from all cross-sections of the constituency,” the PNP further said.
It stated that Dr Haughton is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Scarce Commodity, which markets and provides technical support to the Caribbean’s cannabis industries.
He also writes for a national newspaper, and is founder of Valley Foundation – a charity organization that provides resources for at-risk and marginable youths across Jamaica.
Furthermore, Dr Haughton is the author of Developing Sustainable Balance of Payments in Small Countries: Lessons from Macroeconomic Deadlock in Jamaica.
In the last general election, the PNP’s Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams lost the St James West Central seat by 1,261 votes. She polled 5,374.
The winner of that seat, which recorded a voter turnout of 44.96 percent, is Malahoo-Forte, the country’s current Attorney General.
Prior to the PNP announcing that Dr Haughton is its new candidate in the constituency, it was reported elsewhere in the media that the party would have settled with Raymond Pryce. Pryce also was seeking to represent the PNP in St Catherine North West, but that did not happen.
