New info emerges | 3 nabbed for murder of teen

Hours after law enforcers recovered a schoolbag belonging to the murdered 14-year-old Raven Wilson, they have nabbed three males in relation to the crime that has rocked the St Ann capital.

The three were taken into custody this morning, October 24, the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) told The Beacon a short while ago.

It added that the suspects have not been charged, but they will be interrogated in the presence of their attorneys.

In the meantime, pandemonium erupted in a section of St Ann’s Bay yesterday while police recovered Raven’s schoolbag, not far from where her body was found on Sunday, October 21, in a black garbage bag.

Scores of residents, including some relatives of the murdered teen, converged behind the police cordon while the bag was being recovered.

The JCF previously stated that the victim was reported missing on Friday, October 19. Her body was found two days later in a section of her St Ann’s Bay community known as Top Road.

A section of the child’s face was bashed in.

A highly placed source in the community told The Beacon that Raven also had a cut across the belly, and that her intestine was protruding. That information, however, is yet to be confirmed by police.

At the time Raven was found, she was still in her Ocho Rios High School uniform – a green tunic and yellow plaid blouse.

However the pair of brown shoes she wore at the time she left home for school was missing.

Raven’s mother, Lavern Morgan, said her daughter did not make the trip to school, based on discussions with schoolmates. The teen was on the school’s morning shift.

When she did not return home on Friday, relatives became concerned, reported the matter to the police, and launched a search.

The search reportedly ended after a man found a bloody shoe on his property and made an alarm.

That is what led to the discovery of the body in bushes, The Beacon sources said, adding that the area where the body was found is not remote. It is relatively close to the public roadway and also to houses.

Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang, in the meantime, condemned the murder. He said it is ‘shameful and un-Jamaican,’ adding: “We are concerned about the attack on our children – and young girls in particular… We must take steps to ensure that these perpetrators understand that they will be pursued and tried to the full extent of the law.”

At Ocho Rios High School where Raven was enrolled, counsellors from the Ministry of Education, on Monday, joined other people in offering support to grieving students, who assembled in the school’s conference room.

At the time, Vice-Principal at the institution Christene Wellington told The Beacon: “It is a sobering atmosphere; persons are grieving; persons are still in shock and wondering why.”

In relation to Raven, she commented: “I know she was a fun, happy child.”
