LLUIDAS VALE: Man born on Christmas day buried amid glowing tributes
September 11, 2019A number of people braved the rainfall on Sunday afternoon, September 8, to pay their last respect to Noel Wilks, who died at home on July 19 shortly after he returned from a Kingston wharf where he collected items shipped by one of his sons.
Wilks, 58, was born on Christmas Day 1960.
He attended Lluidas Vale Primary School, and was affectionately called Joint or Bunta.
Andrea Williams-Bernard, who delivered the eulogy, said her late cousin got his first full-time job at Worthy Park Sugar Estate where he acquired his plumbing skills.
“He worked conscientiously and loved his job,” she further said. “In all his life, he exemplified devotion and passion. He was never late for work, and every day he would give a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.”
Williams-Bernard added that Wilks stayed away from unruly crowd and was kind-hearted.
“He had few friends because he never liked the unruly crowd. With his group, he would discuss his many ups and downs, and prayed for better. He was kind-hearted and was willing to offer his skills to many, especially the housewives. He would not hesitate to fix their pipes in order for their sinks to work properly.”
Williams-Bernard said Wilks had a smile that captivated others. “That smile, along with his quietness and friendliness, made him easy to get along with,” she declared inside the packed Lluidas Vale Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Williams-Bernard also said Wilks kept a ‘tidy and accommodating environment’, and was a force with which to reckon in the kitchen.
Wilks, who enjoyed a strong bond with his sons Ricardo and Pete, was also the subject of glowing tributes by other relatives.
One of his young nieces, Jayda Johnson, told the congregation that the death has left her with a broken heart.
“The reason I love and appreciated this man so much was because of the kind deeds he did for me as well as my cousin Jhaythan,” she said. Jhaythan Samuels, six years old, stood beside her on the rostrum.
Wilks is survived by his two adult sons, his parents Lesma and Frank, his siblings and other relatives.
He was interred in Lluidas Vale Cemetery.
