Taylor beats seniors again, finally dips below 45 seconds

Sprint sensation Christopher Taylor, who will turn 19 next month, has moved to allay fears over whether he will successfully make the transition fully into the senior aspect of the sport.

“I am going to keep my focus; so yes I will make the transition,” he told THE BEACON in an exclusive interview last Saturday, September 1.

At the time, he was attending a belated birthday party held in his hometown of Ewarton, St Catherine, for his 105 year-old great-grandmother Maud Campbell-Richards.

A confident Taylor, in making his case about a successful transition, mentioned his compatriot Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest sprinter.

“When people say I am doing too much, what do they mean? Did Usain Bolt burn out? That’s a question I need to ask… He wasn’t burned out.

“So, I know what I am doing; I keep focused. It is not how hard you train; is how much you compete that burns you out,” added Taylor.

He will start sixth form at Calabar High School this month, and subsequently resume training.

“It is off-season now; I start school in the next two weeks; I am going to sixth form. After about two months into school, I will go back into training and from there I will know what’s next.”

The athlete had a spectacular showing in his most recent season, clocking 10.11 seconds in the 100 Metres to equal Jamaica’s national junior record in that event.

Taylor also went below 45 seconds for the first time in the 400 Metres and, in so doing, broke Jamaica’s junior record in that event. He, at the time, ran 44.88 seconds.

The sprinter, in THE BEACON interview, encouraged young athletes to work hard.

“Once you work hard, you are going to get good results. So just keep on working hard and motivate yourself. Once you have a good support team, you would be good,” he said.
