Taylor returns home, links speed to rural climate

He spends most of his time these days in urban centres, attending Calabar High School in St Andrew and living in Portmore, St Catherine.

But Christopher Taylor, now the poster boy of Jamaica’s junior athletics, does not forget his deep rural roots.

“I grew up in Ewarton and Lluidas Vale,” he told THE BEACON. “I was back and forth between those two communities.”

Ewarton and Lluidas Vale, located in St Catherine North West, are a taxi apart.

They are also near the childhood home and school of renowned sprinter Asafa Powell.

Taylor, who attended Ewarton Primary and Lluidas Vale Primary, is the son of Beverly Angus from Lluidas Vale and Steve Taylor from Ewarton.

“Growing up in Ewarton was amazing. I mean, the climate is the best part about it; waking up in the morning and seeing the fog; it makes you breathe really good. Maybe that’s why I am so fast right now. Ewarton is a very peaceful place most of the times. It’s a nice place to come and visit,” Taylor said last Saturday while he attended a belated party to celebrate the 105th birthday of his great-grandmother Maud Campbell-Richards.

He, in an exclusive interview with THE BEACON, added that, when he left rural St Catherine to live in urban Portmore, he made the transition easily.

Portmore, Taylor noted, has a rich blend of people.

“The transition wasn’t that hard for me. When I went to live in Portmore – you know everybody is in Portmore, so I just blend in really fast and take most of the town tradition and transfer it. Now I am living happy in town,” the sprinter further said.
