Ewarton teacher laid to rest

Teacher at Ewarton High School in St Catherine Karlene Reid-Leon, who has been eulogized as a staunch supporter of the People’s National Party, was on the verge of pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work when she died on January 24.

She was laid to rest at Ewarton Cemetery on Sunday, February 24, after a funeral service at Linstead Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Leon passed away at Kingston Public Hospital, where she was admitted for corrective surgery in relation to an illness not disclosed publicly.

As it relates to her professional life, Leon started teaching in her hometown at Ewarton Basic School, and subsequently worked as a pre-trained teacher at Crescent All Age.

Leon, in 1997, enrolled at St Joseph’s Teachers College where she gained a diploma.

She later was employed at Linstead All Age.

Leon’s dream, however, was to be at her alma mater – Ewarton High School. That dream became reality.

While at Ewarton High for almost 20 years, she taught English, and served as bookroom coordinator, senior teacher in charge of the prefect body, Grade 9 coordinator, and Jamaica Teachers Association contact teacher.

Leon eventually attained a Bachelor’s of Science degree.

She was scheduled to be awarded for long service to Ewarton High where she worked until January 8.

Meanwhile, Leon fell ill about five years ago, and underwent an initial surgery at the time.

She, on January 9 this year, went to Kingston Public Hospital where she was admitted for corrective surgery.

Things took a turn for the worse on January 24 when Leon died at the medical facility.

She has been eulogised as an advocate for children’s rights, as well as a kind-hearted teacher and mother of three children.
