A consummate professional | Grange shocked by death of culture director

Government minister Olivia Grange has expressed ‘shock and deep sorrow’ at the sudden passing of Dr Janice Lindsay, who served as Principal Director of Culture and Creative Industries in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

Dr Lindsay, who also acted as Permanent Secretary between May and November 2017, died at the University Hospital of the West Indies on Friday (July 6) after a brief illness.

Grange described her as the ‘consummate professional’ whose expertise played a large part in the accomplishments made regarding culture.

“To say that she will be sadly missed is an understatement. Her loss will be greatly felt by all of us in the ministry,” Grange added, while she expressed sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends.

Dr Lindsay, who completed a doctorate degree in World Cultural Heritage Studies at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, also held a Master of Arts in Heritage Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication from the University of the West Indies, Mona.

She received awards in recognition of her work in sustainable heritage tourism.

She was one of two representatives from Jamaica to serve on the World Heritage Committee, which is managed by UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The World Heritage Committe is responsible for implementation of the World Heritage Convention, management of the World Heritage Fund, and allocation of financial assistance when requested.

“Dr Lindsay was known for her kindness and dedication as a professional,” the international organization said on its website.

“The staff of the World Heritage Centre, with whom Dr Lindsay had established relations of close cooperation and friendship, extends its heartfelt condolences to her friends and family.”
