Minister of Science Dr Andrew Wheatley said he has instructed his lawyer to sue attorney-at-law and Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Mark Golding, for alleged defamatory comments posted on social networking site Facebook.

“Those who seek to defame others must pay a price,” declared Dr Wheatley, who also is member of parliament for St Catherine South Central.

The post, which appeared on Golding’s Facebook page this week, allegedly hinted at a supposed link between Dr Wheatley and certain items found in St Catherine. No evidence of such link has been provided publicly.

The post was later deleted from the Opposition spokesman’s page, but not before it was circulated on social media. It also became the subject of a story published on an unfamiliar website.

Like the original Facebook post, the website story also disappeared.

Dr Wheatley vowed to protect his reputation.

“I jealously guard my reputation, and I will not allow either blatant defamation or innuendo to damage it,” he said, adding that he is respected in and out of politics.

“I have functioned with integrity and decency. I will be seeking all legal remedies to protect my name,” added Dr Wheatley.

He thinks the post that appeared on the Opposition spokesman’s Facebook page is part of an orchestrated effort to tarnish his reputation.

“I think it is part of a campaign of misinformation and innuendo that is calculated to undermine both me as a minister and the government. We have heard many things over the past weeks, but yet to see any evidence of wrongdoing,” Dr Wheatley further said.
