Nearly 2,000 youths tricked by fake news
March 18, 2019The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) said approximately 2,000 people erroneously showed up at its Up Park Camp location today to sign up for the Jamaica National Service Corp (JNSC) recruiting programme.
It added: “The applicants came out in response to false reports on social media that the JDF was registering persons this morning, and that anyone with an interest in signing up should come to the JDF Headquarters for an interview.
“While we appreciate the interest and excitement that persons have shown by coming out this morning to register for the JNSC programme, we are reminding applicants that they should only rely on information posted on official JDF social media platforms and mainstream news for information relating to their applications or the application process,” added the JDF.
It noted that persons travelled from as far as Westmoreland and St James, adding that the JDF eventually decided to register and process some applicants.
It noted that, under normal circumstance, the JDF would process between 60 and 80 applicants per day.
The JDF also reminded interested applicants that there is no application fee or other costs associated with applying, adding that persons should be immediately suspicious of anyone trying to ‘sell’ them a spot in the organization.
“The JDF is buoyed by the show of support and are encouraged by the enthusiasm that young Jamaicans have shown for the JNSC programme, but we urge caution as unscrupulous and mischievous persons may try to hijack this enthusiasm for their own nefarious intents,” the JDF further said.
It also announced that it will investigate the origin of the fake posting, and will update the public accordingly.
