Success halts mourning | Kellits family celebrates big performance in PEP
July 3, 2019Members of a family yesterday took a break from mourning to celebrate the impressive academic achievements of a young relative – Sheanelle Brown, who is the Head Girl at Kellits Primary School in Clarendon.
Sheanelle, who told The Beacon that she will become the island’s second female prime minister, achieved a whopping average of 98 percent in the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) exams.
She got the highest possible ranking (Highly Proficient) in all four PEP subjects – Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.
Sheanelle, in September, will attend the prestigious all-girl school, Westwood High, located in Stewart Town, Trelawny.
“I feel very proud of myself, and I am very happy,” she told The Beacon, adding that she studied very hard and will continue to do so.
“My parents are expecting me to make them proud and also to excel in my education,” Sheanelle further noted.
Her father, Shean Brown, beamed with pride as he watched Sheanelle collect award after award during her graduation yesterday, July 2.
“I am very proud of her,” he told The Beacon.
“Sheanelle worked hard over the years and we try to be there for her, and we are just happy that she has come this far and she has made us proud,” the father added.
Similar sentiments came from Beverley Johnson, Sheanelle’s grandmother. “I feel excited and glad for her,” she declared.
The grandmother was the eldest among a group of relatives who yesterday decked out in red T-shirts that bear an image of Sheanelle at the front, and their respective relationships to Sheanelle boldly written on the back.
The absence of Sheanelle’s uncle – Princeton Johnson, better known as Benji, did not go unnoticed. He was controversially shot dead by a police officer in Kellits town on the night of June 22.
His mother, Beverly, in the midst of celebrating her grand-daughter’s academic feat at the graduation, attempted to comment on the tragedy. Other relatives stopped her.
“Benji is the one who used to carry Sheanelle to school every morning,” one of Benji’s sisters said. “This is dedicated to Benji,” she further declared in relation to Sheanelle’s success.
Sheanelle’s family, no doubt, is anticipating many other moments to celebrate.
