ST ANN: Bamboo cops win bigNovember 29, 2019 0 By Horace Mills
Bamboo Police Station in St. Ann has won a competition based on compliance with Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) standard operating procedures, such as Records Management, Station Administration, Station Facility, Utilities Conservation, and Customer Service.
The 31 stations that were involved in the pilot initiative are from Area Two of the JCF – covering the parishes of St. Mary, St. Ann and Portland.
The contest, dubbed Transforming Our Police Service (TOPS) Competition, commenced on September 16 and ended October 31.
Bamboo Police Station, headed by Sergeant Patricia Brown, won the first-place trophy and a cheque valued at $100,000.
Oracabessa Police Station in St. Mary received the Prisoners in Custody Award during a ceremony, held at Couples San Souci in St. Mary on Wednesday, November 27.
Gayle Police Station, in the meantime, is the winner in the St. Mary Division.
The champion in Portland Division is San San Police Station.
Otarah Byfield-Nugent, Chief Executive Officer of the Police Civilian Oversight Authority that hosted the competition, said the move was aimed at raising compliance, standards and procedures among JCF members.
“We understand that you work under very stressful conditions – sometimes under very undesirable conditions, but we want to show you that we recognise the value of your service, and we are hoping that – by creating a competitive element or environment – you will be encouraged to perform,” she said.
Byfield-Nugent also indicated that the internal or back-office process at police stations is important and so it formed a big part of the competition.
“The back-office process is very critical. It will impact your credibility to the public, your legitimacy to the public, and it will impact the way the public sees you,” added Byfield-Nugent.
