Seaga hospitalized in USMay 10, 2019
Jamaica’s fifth prime minister, Edward Seaga, is undergoing treatment at a Florida hospital in the United States.
The family of the 88-year-old, whose next birthday will be on May 28, has not disclosed the ailment that has caused hospitalization. It is said that the former prime minister fell ill while travelling overseas.
His wife, Carla, noted that he is receiving ‘excellent’ medical care.
She, in a press statement released through Jamaica House on May 9, said:
We would like to thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support for my husband who has been ill and who is receiving medical treatment in Florida.
He is receiving excellent medical care and is sustained too by the love of his family and friends.
He is currently in hospital as he has to receive further treatment there.
We continue to pray for him and support him in his present stable environment.
God bless Jamaica.
Mr Seaga, who served as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1989, was also Leader of Opposition and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party.
He retired from representational politics in 2005, having served in the House of Representatives for 43 years – the longest period ever served by a local parliamentarian. He represented Kingston Western.
Mr Seaga also served two years as a member of the Legislative Council, the pre-independence legislature.
