Police to intensify clampdown on illegal sirens, flashing lights, tints

The Police High Command has issued what it said is a strong caution to motorists against installing flashing lights, sirens, and certain tints on their vehicles, adding that officers will intensify the clampdown on such breach.

“The warning comes ahead of the launch of a new phase of the police’s continued focus on public order, safety and traffic management, which will see stricter enforcement of all aspects of the Road Traffic Act, among other things,” said the High Command, headed by commissioner Antony Anderson.

It added: “Motorists who have modified their vehicles with flashing lights and/or sirens that imitate those used by authorised emergency vehicles – such as police vehicles, ambulances and fire engines – are being urged to remove them immediately.”

The Police High Command stated that motorists who ignore its warning to remove the devices will not only face inconvenience, but “moreso the full brunt of the law, including the seizure of the vehicles to have them removed forthwith”.

The police noted that, besides being illegal, the flashing lights confuse members of the public and eventually hinder the progress of vehicles authorised to use such devices.

“The warning also extends to drivers of public passenger vehicles who use darker grades of tints than allowed by law,” added the Police High Command.
