Pickersgill gives ‘caretaker for life’ title during ceremony; Amos responds

They don’t meet often at public events in the St Catherine North West constituency.

When their paths crossed last week Friday, August 9, Robert Pickersgill and Newton Amos apparently could not escape trading political jabs.

Pickersgill, the Member of Parliament for St Catherine North West, said Newton Amos of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will never win the seat he won seven consecutive elections.

While delivering an address at the official opening of Shady Grove Police Station in the constituency, Pickersgill said: “They call me Chairman for life [in the People’s National Party] and I see Mr Amos here, and I am saying you are going to be caretaker for life. I mean that genuinely although I am laughing.”

Amos, who was not scheduled to speak at the event, replied: “That’s not what the facts are showing; the facts are showing otherwise.”

In response, Pickersgill stated that Amos was depending on ‘bogus’ facts.

“We shall see,” Amos said, ending the tit-for-tat.

Amos, since becoming the JLP candidate in St Catherine North West, significantly reduced Pickersgill’s margin of victory when they first squared off in the 2016 general election.

Amos later gained grounds for the JLP when the local government elections were held.

He will go up against Pickersgill’s successor, Hugh Graham, in the next general election.

Pickersgill already announced that he will not contest the next general election.
