PHOTOS: Rosemount celebrate trophies, $300K in Ewarton league

A new winner has emerged in the Ewarton Bobby Pickersgill/RumBar Invitational Corner League that featured 12 teams.

In the final played on Sunday at Ewarton Sports Complex in St Catherine North West, Rosemount throbbed Diamond Sox 2-0.

Cleon Pryce scored in the 55th minute and Dawayne Smith in the 72nd.

The winning Rosemount team lifted two trophies – one awarded by RumBar and the other by Robert ‘Bobby’ Pickersgill, outgoing Member of Parliament for St Catherine North West.

Rosemount also collected the winner’s cheque valued at $300,000, while Diamond Sox received $170,000 for finishing second.

Strike Back pocketed $120,000 for its third-place finish. The 2017 champions, Browns Town, are likely to be sanctioned for not showing up to participate in the third-place play-off.

Three players, in the meantime, received individual awards for outstanding performances.

Matthew Taylor, who played for Rosemount, received the Golden Boot Award for scoring four goals in the competition.

Four players from different teams qualified for that award, but the league organizers opted to present it to a member of the winning team – Rosemount.

The Golden Boot Award was sponsored by the Sugar Minott Foundation, which also contributed to the trophy for the overall winner of the league.

Erick Edwards of Diamond Sox, who was absent from the presentation ceremony, is recipient of the Golden Glove Award. He also received $5000 for his ‘goal’ efforts.

Dawayne Smith

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) is captain of the Rosemount team, Dawayne Smith.

“The MVP was selected for the finals based on touches and passes he made in the game, how important was his scoring – if he scored, and the overall impact he had on his team in terms of control and gameplay,” said Barrington Thompson, General Secretary of Ewarton Sports Complex and the just-concluded league.

The winning captain, in an interview with THE BEACON, said he is elated to be part of the victorious team and recipient of the MVP Award.

“I am extremely elated. It’s been a long time coming. We fought hard and I am proud of the guys. We finally delivered. We, the players, understood what was at stake and we are thankful that we were on the victorious side,” the MVP said, adding that the league was ‘well run’.

In the meantime, Pickersgill, after whom the league is named, congratulated organizers and fans for an ‘incident-free’ competition.

He noted that the league happened while Ewarton and other parts of St Catherine North Police Division remain under a state of public emergency.

“We have been told that this corner league is the best in Jamaica and we want to keep it that way,” Pickersgill said.

But he noted: “From what I am seeing and experiencing, we have to lay down some ground rules.” He did not specify what rules may be introduced.
