NWC: Rio Cobre apparent chemical spill hits water supply to Spanish Town

The National Water Commission (NWC) said an apparent chemical spill in the Rio Cobre river valley has necessitated shutdown of the Spanish Town Treatment Plant in St Catherine, which supplies approximately 3 million gallons of water daily to the Spanish Town area.

The company stated that it will try to extend the service area of the Chung’s Well and Angel’s facilities to provide relief water supply to customers affected by the shutdown.

“The company is noting that the temporary measures now being implemented may not realise near normal water pressures, but should provide some relief against the significant shortfall caused by the loss of production,” the NWC said.

It added that it will continue to closely monitor the situation, and will resume operations when it is verified as safe to do so.

The NWC said the areas affected include: Spanish Town, Westmore, Hampton Green, Lakemore Gdns, Newton Avenue, Nugent Street, McCoy’s Land, Mayfair Mews, Brunswick Avenue, Job’s Lane, White Water Meadows, Hartlands, McCooks Pen, Leiba Gardens, Sydenham Gardens, Wedge Wood Gardens, Willowdene Housing Scheme, and Hopedale Housing Scheme.
