Miss Olga hits 100 years!
April 22, 2019The countdown has ended.
Olga Clarke today reached 100 years old, becoming the first person in her immediate family to have hit such milestone.
“I feel happy that I am able to live so long; it is the goodness of Almighty God and I am giving him the praise and thanks,” said the new centenarian, born 22 April 1919, at Top Mountain district in Kitson Town, St Catherine.
Miss Olga previously resided at Mendez district in Point Hill, St Catherine. She now lives at Fairfield – also in Point Hill, with her daughter Dorothy Douglas and son-in-law Lloyd Douglas.
Nine of her 10 children are still alive. Her husband Sylvester Clarke passed away; so too have three of her four siblings.
Miss Olga, whose main complaints are arthritis and shortness of breath, is able to hear only loud sounds or speech.
She goes to the restroom on her own, and still walks from her bedroom to the verandah.
In her heyday, Miss Olga was revered for her mouth-watering cassava bammies, turned cornmeal and sweet potatoes.
She, in fact, sold bammies at Linstead Market in St Catherine for more than 30 years.
Miss Olga, a devout Christian, is a member of the Full Truth Church of God Deliverance Centre in Mendez, Point Hill.
Although she is no longer physically fit to regularly attend service on Sundays, she remains connected to her church.
She attended church yesterday as part of a pre-birthday celebration hosted by her family. Miss Olga, surrounded by relatives and friends, later cut the all-important birthday cake during a party held at her Fairfield home.
Evel Brown, one of Miss Olga’s great-granddaughters, told The Beacon that the centenarian is a family-orientated woman who is always encouraging people to serve the Lord.
“She is a very fun-loving, jovial, and encouraging person,” Brown added.
Miss Olga, in the meantime, said she would like to be remembered for different things – including her scrumptious bammies.
“I wish everyone that knows me will remember me for how long I lived on this earth and the splendid bammy baker I was – and how much of a spiritual woman I am,” she further declared.
