LINSTEAD: Taxi operators protest against gov’t clampdown

November 21, 2018 0 By Horace Mills

Commuters are having a tough time in the streets this morning as some taxi operators in and around Linstead, St Catherine, join a growing protest against Government’s move to further clamp down on the sector especially through new legislation.

The amended Road Traffic Bill, which proposes harsher penalties and fines for breaches, has been passed in the House of Representatives and will next be deliberated in the Senate.

Taxi operators also have been complaining about an increase in route taxi licence fees from $12,000 to $15,000.

The protest, which started in other sections of the island this week, reached the Linstead area this morning, November 21, resulting in many commuters being stranded on their way to work or school.

The routes affected include Linstead town to Bog Walk, Ewarton, Treadways, Time and Patience, and Victoria.
