LINSTEAD: Family hosts vigil, says father of six had great plans

In addition to creating a Facebook page dedicated to the memory of 39-year-old Niguel ‘Neron’ Beason, relatives of the deceased spoke glowingly of him as a father and go-getter during a candlelight vigil held at Bronx in New York, USA.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said a licensed firearm holder, 56-year-old Averton Roy, fatally shot Mr Beason on December 31 at Club Lavish in Mr Beason’s old hometown of Linstead, St Catherine. Both men, who are Jamaicans, were visiting the island.

The shooter was freed of a murder charge after footage obtained from a surveillance camera reportedly showed that he acted in self-defence when he was attacked by Mr Beason and another man.

At the vigil held on January 12, the gathering of an estimated 100 people observed a moment of silence in honour of Mr Beason.

Mr Beason’s youngest sister, Nadine Beason, in her tribute, noted that she was ‘pretty close’ to her brother who died leaving six children.

She stated that Mr Beason, who also lived at Manchester in England, did not inform her that he was visiting Jamaica, but she picked it up in conversations they had.

The shooting incident was the last thing Ms Beason expected. “It is a surprise to me,” she told persons at the candlelight vigil.

She continued: “I know that he (Mr Beason) has great plans for his life; he wanted to do a lot for his children. I often encouraged him to just settle down, get your mind straight so that wherever you decide to live must be at a central point where your children can reach you.”

Ms Beason further stated that her late brother was ambitious and was not afraid to take risks.

“He is a very strong-minded person. When I tried to tell him to be careful, he is always telling me that he is like a mongoose… He said mongoose says, if you are not a man, you don’t take chances… He lived hard and he took a lot of chances, but I know why he did it.

“He saw himself as not staying in the same place he was; he always wanted to grow. I have been with him when he was really like trying – trying his best. He is always [saying] he just want to have this; he wanted to have that. I am always saying ‘take your time; whatever is yours is going to be yours’,” added Ms Beason.

No date has yet been announced regarding the burial of Mr Beason.
