KELLITS: Suspected drowning stuns residents

A weeping crowd converged on the banks of a Clarendon river yesterday as news rapidly spread about the suspected drowning of a carpenter, who had gone to the river to enjoy Easter Monday holiday with close relatives and friends.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF)said the deceased is 33-year-old Oliver Newman from Croft’s Hill district in Clarendon.

The suspected drowning unfolded about 11:30AM at Arthur Seat river, not far from Kellits.

The JCF, through its Corporate Communications Unit, said: “Reports are that Newman and friends were swimming at the Arthur Seat river when he allegedly got into difficulty and drowned. The police were summoned and he was fished from the water.”

Residents stated that, when Newman got into difficulty, he shouted for help, but that came too late.

Persons cried openly as a group of men later pull Newman’s body – attired only in dark-blue shorts – from the water. They did so after attaching a length of rope to the corpse.

Among the persons spotted at the river were Newman’s girlfriend, his mother-in-law, and his baby girl.
