Hylton to contest election in St James – PNP
January 28, 2019Former Member of Parliament for St Andrew Eastern, Andre Hylton, will represent the People’s National Party in St James Central when the next election is held there, said the People’s National Party (PNP).
Hylton, who is an automotive specialist and operator of Andre’s Auto Supplies Company Limited, was formally presented during the party’s National Executive Council meeting in St James yesterday, January 27.
“Mr Andre Hylton has a deep and unflinching passion for nation building and national service,” the PNP said.
It added that Hylton is a long-serving member of the Rotary Club of Kingston; and founding Chairman of the Guiding Light Foundation that adopted two basic schools, sponsors more than 60 students monthly, and runs mentorship programmes in inner-city communities.
The current Member of Parliament for St James Central is Heroy Clarke of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
In the 2016 general election, Clarke polled 6,887 votes to win the seat by 1,919 votes. The defeated PNP candidate was attorney-at-law Ashley Ann Foster. The voter turnout in the constituency was 42.80 percent, according to the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.
St James Central was one of three new constituencies approved in time for the 2011 general election.
Lloyd B Smith of the PNP was the first Member of Parliament. He, in the 2011 general election, defeated Clarke who went on the win the seat in the second election to be held there.
