Future pathologist scores big at Redwood Primary

In the rural community of Redwood, about 15 minutes drive away from the town of Linstead in St Catherine, there is a primary school that punched above its weight this year in the Grade Six Achievement Test.

One of its best academic punchers, Aleyanna Lee, is the Head Girl who has earned a 91.8 percent average in GSAT.

In September, the 11-year-old will open a new chapter at St Andrew High School For Girls in the corporate area.

She is cognizant that she cannot allow the high standard set at Redwood Primary to peter out.

She, after all, has a big dream to realize. “I want to become a pathologist because Jamaican pathologists are few and I love their job,” Aleyanna told Jamaica Beacon.

She is already setting the stage for great things, considering her 95 percent grade in GSAT Mathematics, 83 percent in Communication Task, 93 percent in Science, 91 percent in Language Arts, and 97 percent in Social Studies.

Aleyanna’s mother, Marshal Cockburn, who noted that she is a single-parent, said the grades have strengthened her resolve to invest further in education.

“It has been a hard and lonely financial journey. After hearing the results, however, the investment has made me rich,” she asserted.

“My support has been strong as a single parent leaving no stones unturned to fulfill my daughter’s dream of a good average in GSAT. My expectation for her is that she will continue on the path of success.”

Aleyanna’s GSAT teacher kerry-Ann McIntosh, in the meantime, said the student has all the traits of a good leader and scholar.

“Aleyanna is a very humble, respectful, dedicated and hardworking student who studies really hard. She has been featured in the Children’s Own newspaper several times for earning the highest average in her class.”

“She made mistakes and has misconceptions like any ordinary student. But, whenever she gets a concept incorrect, she seeks to know why it was incorrect so she won’t make that mistake again. She is self-motivated and is very helpful to her classmates. With all these positive attributes, Aleyanna is presently the head girl of Redwood Primary,” said the GSAT teacher.
