UPDATE: The man who fatally shot a business operator and wounded a bartender last night at Cotton Piece district in Ewarton, St Catherine, is a licensed firearm holder, who reportedly is claiming that he acted in self-defence.

The deceased is known as Mikey, owner of ‘Spicy Mikey Jerk’ Centre and Bar located at Cotton Piece. He is pictured above.

He was a close friend of the shooter.

Both men, as well as the bartender employed by the late Mikey, were at the business establishment.

An argument developed between the two males and reportedly escalated into physical contact.

The licensed firearm holder, who reportedly claimed that Mikey tried to disarm him, fired a shot, hitting Mikey as well as the bartender.

It is said that the bullet struck the bartender accidentally. Sources told The Beacon that it was the shooter who took the bartender to hospital.

As news of the shooting spread throughout the community, several people gathered at the scene. The police also arrived there and cordoned off the area, resulting in a pile-up of traffic.

The slain man was the only remaining child for his mother. His mother has two other children, but they died of natural cause. One of them passed away last year.
