DNA confirms baby stolen from hospital in Kingston is found
February 7, 2019The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said, after nearly a month of intense investigations that spanned multiple agencies and parishes, investigators are today confirming that the baby stolen at Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston on January 9 has been found.
It said: “The announcement comes as DNA tests that were conducted on a baby that was found in the custody of a woman in St Catherine on Tuesday, as well as the parents of the stolen baby, have confirmed with certainty that the baby is the one that was stolen in January.”
The Government Forensic Lab did the test.
The woman in whose custody the stolen baby was found remains in police custody, and is to face an identification parade as soon as arrangements are finalized.
The baby remains in state care while the relevant procedures are being completed, the JCF further said.
His parents are Suzett Whyte and Sinclair Hutton.
The case, in the meantime, started to unfold last month when Whyte, then a patient at Victoria Jubilee Hospital, returned from the bathroom and discovered that her newborn was missing.
An alarm was raised and it was borne out that the baby had been stolen.
The Kingston Western Police commenced their probe and called on the public to remain alert.
“A tip came on Tuesday, February 5, when officials at the Registrar’s General Department notified police of a suspicious woman trying to register a baby. She was arrested and the baby placed in protective custody,” added the JCF.
