Police have taken a man into custody in relation to the murder of an elderly couple in the parish of Portland on June 22.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said: “One man has been taken into custody as detectives form the Criminal Investigation Branch Headquarters, and the Major Investigation Division, intensify the investigation into the death of the retired couple at their home in Portland on the weekend.”

“The man, who is considered a person of interest in the matter, was picked up on Saturday afternoon at a business establishment in Kingston,” added the JCF.

It expressed regret at the killing of the two retirees, and promised to ensure that the top level investigation continues ‘with alacrity and the highest level of professionalism’.

The JCF previously reported that the victims are 75-year-old Halford Anderson also called Charlie, and his 71-year-old wife Florence Anderson also known as Gayle.

Residents stumbled upon the bodies about 1:30pm outside the couple’s house in Mount Pleasant district, Hope Bay, Portland.

“Mr Anderson’s body was seen outside partially burnt and the wife’s body was also seen outside with multiple wounds. The scene was processed and the bodies removed to the morgue pending post mortem,” the JCF previously said.

The couple lived in Manchester, England, for decades before retiring in Jamaica.

Prior to the murders, Mrs Anderson told police that she was the victim of a credit card fraud. She reportedly lost some JA$8 million, the British press reported.
