The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said a man was fatally shot and a police officer injured at Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11, during what investigators describe as a break in.

The dead man has been identified as 26-year-old Javaunne Cunningham, who is pictured above. He is from Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11.

The JCF, in a response to a query by The Beacon, did not give a clear explanation of how the incident unfolded on Saturday, December 22.

It however stated that the police officer was hit in the face with a baton, and was treated at hospital and released.

The JCF noted that the Inspectorate of Constabulary, as well as the Independent Commission of Investigations, is investigating.

Meanwhile, a friend of the late Cunningham told The Beacon that the civilian allegedly was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity.

“Three weeks ago, my friend by the name of Javaunne Cunningham left the United Kingdom for Jamaica for his grandad funeral. Fast forward to Saturday night: we had some devastating news that he has been shot five times in [a case of] mistaken identity in the Seaview area,” said the concerned friend who resides in the United Kingdom.
