Ann-Marie Vaz has become the first female to be elected Member of Parliament for the Portland Eastern constituency, beating off a challenge by Damion Crawford of the People’s National Party (PNP).

Mrs Vaz won the seat for the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) today, April 4, amassing 9,917 or 51 percent of the votes. Her opponent got 9,611 votes.

The winner’s husband, Daryl Vaz, is the MP for the only other constituency in the parish of Portland.

Meanwhile, Crawford, a former Member of Parliament for St Andrew East Rural, was selected to represent the PNP in Portland Eastern after the murder of PNP parliamentarian Dr Lyndale Bloomfield.

The PNP controlled the seat for seven consecutive elections. Its margin of victory in the last general election was 2,276 votes.
