Nearly a decade after he won Jamaica’s premier singing competition – Rising Stars, Dalton Harris has secured an even bigger win.

The 24-year-old, who hails from a rural community in Clarendon parish called Sanguinetti, was today declared winner of the X Factor UK competition based on public votes.

He entered the final with two other contestants – Scarlette Lee who finished second and third-place finisher Anthony Russell. Harris, for weeks, was touted as the hot favourite to win.

The actual announcement of the victor happened some 24 hours after all three finalists threw down the gauntlet with two performances each.

Harris belted out A Song For You by Donny Hathaway, as well as a duet with Emeli Sande.

He, for the umpteenth time in the contest, received a standing ovation from all three judges as well as protracted cheers from the live audience.

Harris was virtually speechless after being declared the 2018 winner. When emcee Dermot O’Leary asked how he felt about the victory, the stooped down on the stage and, in apparent disbelief, muttered: “I just won the X Factor.”

His mentor, Louis Tomlinson, who also was a judge in the competition, stood beside him and beamed with pride.

Tomlinson said: “Honestly, he (Harris) has been a pleasure to work with – a true true professional and a real real winner throughout this [competition]. So I am so proud of you [Harris].”

For the win, the Jamaican, who is a survivor of physical abuse, secured a recording contract with Syco Records, owned by Sony.
