LINSTEAD: Unsung heroes repair roads ‘forgotten’ by politicians

October 24, 2019 0 By Horace Mills

National Heroes Day was like Labour Day for some unsung heroes who live in Bermaddy, Mullock and Ruxley districts in St Catherine.

They turned out in their numbers to take on the challenge of repairing the roads and cleaning drains in the aforementioned communities.

The area covered is located in two constituencies – North Western and North Eastern St Catherine, where the Members of Parliament are Robert Pickersgill and Leslie Campbell respectively, and the Councillors are Sydney Rose and Leroy Dunn.

Residents said they decided to repair the roads because their elected representatives have ‘totally forgotten that these parts of the constituencies do exist’.

Derrick Mattis, a taxi operator from the area, suggested the project and several residents immediately bought into it.

Justice of the Peace Donald Taffe, for example, noted that the matter was urgent, adding that residents could no longer wait for more empty promises from their political representatives.

Another of the main participants, Amoy Levers, collected monetary donations from people who use the deplorable roadway daily.

“I went house by house asking for contributions to purchase the cement prior to the day which most residents were more than willing to give,” said Levers, a teacher and President of Bermaddy Primary School’s Parent Teachers Association.

Jerome Martin is another of the volunteers. He used his pickup truck to carry sand.

Albiston Brown used his van to transport water because the area is also plagued by water problems.

Keith Hutchinson volunteered the use of his cement mixer.

Another resident, Belinda Hutchinson, provided lunch at her expense.

“That’s the spirit we truly endorse… We worked all day,” said Levers.

She noted that the project was not completed on National Heroes Day, October 21, and so residents will resume the work on Sunday, 3 November 2019.

In the meantime, residents of Old Mount Diablo, which is another community in Treadways area of Linstead, undertook a similar initiative recently. To read about their project, CLICK HERE.
