The parish of St James, which often makes headlines for the wrong reasons, now has much to celebrate.

One of its sons, Adrian Rhoden, has become the proud holder of a whopping 13 CSEC subjects, administered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC).

He attained the best grade possible (Grade One) in 12 of the subjects.

“I am very pleased that the work I have invested and the contributions from my family, friends and teachers have finally paid off. It brings me satisfaction that I have made everyone, including myself, proud,” said the Cornwall College past-student.

Adrian, who is also a past-student of New Concept Kindergarten and Chetwood Memorial Primary School, reaped the following 10 subjects this year:

  • Mathematics – Grade One
  • Additional Mathematics – Grade One
  • Biology – Grade One
  • Chemistry – Grade One
  • Physics – Grade One
  • Principles of Accounts – Grade One
  • Spanish – Grade One
  • Information Technology – Grade One
  • English A – Grade One
  • English B – Grade Two

In testing the academic waters last year, the 17-year-old genius demolished three other CSEC subjects, namely:

  • Human and Social Biology – Grade One
  • Principles of Business – Grade One
  • Social Studies – Grade One

Adrian, a native of Flower Hill district, will enroll in the sixth form programme at Cornwall College, from where he graduated recently as salutatorian.

He will subsequently study medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Adrian, whose father Oscar Rhoden died of a cardiac arrest in 2017, attributes his success to hard work, guidance from his teachers, and support from his friends and relatives – especially his mother Claudia Jarrett.

Jarrett, still basking in her son’s glory, told The Beacon that she has cried tears of joy.

“We have been through a lot,” she further noted.

Jarrett is fascinated by her son’s determination to achieve greatness.

“I am extremely happy as a proud single mother,” she said, adding: “Words are not enough to express my feeling right now. It was not easy, but, with his determination and dedication, my son managed to pull through.”
