BEACON OF THE DAY: Aliyah Sharpe – CXC Achiever Motivated By Mom’s Hard Work
September 10, 2024KINGSTON – Aliyah Sharpe, who was crowned Miss Dunoon Park Technical High School 2023, has proven that she also is a model student in academics.
She attained seven subjects in this year’s sitting of the CSEC exams, set by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC).
“After the exams, I was a bit doubtful about how I did. I don’t know why…” she said. “When I got my results, I cried because I couldn’t believe what I had achieved. It only motivated me more.”
Aliyah achieved the highest attainable grade (Grade One) in five of the subjects – English A, Information Technology, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, and Principles of Business. She received Grade Two in Social Studies and Mathematics.
When she was graduating from Dunoon Park Technical, Aliyah copped a number of awards for the school year – Top Female Student, Most Outstanding Student in Office Administration, Outstanding Contribution To The Business Department, Most Outstanding In Social Studies, Honour Roll Achiever, and Most Outstanding In Information Technology.
Now enrolled in sixth form at The Queen’s School, Aliyah attributed her latest academic climb to her dedicated teachers at Dunoon Park Technical in Kingston, to her faith in God, and to her parents – especially her mother Camesha Barton.
“I grew up with my mother. Therefore, I was the one to see all the things that she had to adhere to just to make me and my sister comfortable… I watched her cry, and I vowed to make her cry tears of joy rather than tears of pain…” the 17-year-old told The Beacon.
She added: “I worked hard [and at] late nights just to excel in school. I fall asleep with books on my chest every night. I never paused to even take a breath because I know I have to make her and my father the proudest – and that is exactly what I’ve been doing.”
Her mother is indeed proud. “I am such a proud parent right now. Aliyah is a strong motivation for me; she is determined. She knows exactly what she wants and that is the main thing that pushes her,” she said.
Aliyah’s goal is to become a tax attorney.
“For my first ever Careers Day in kindergarten, I dressed as a judge. When I started primary school and did my research on the career, I liked lawyers more. And ever since then, it has been my aspiration to become a lawyer. However, since high school – in grade 9 to be exact, I started doing business subjects – and Accounts was one of them,” she explained.
Born in Spanish Town Hospital, Aliyah lived in St Catherine until she was eight years old. She moved to Kingston, where she continued her education at Mountain View Primary and Infant School. She initially attended Ewarton Primary.
Aliyah is not only a leader in academics; she also was a standout in extracurricular activities at Dunoon Park Technical High.
She served as a senior prefect and was involved in different school-based clubs, including Key Club and Junior Optimist Club.
Her advice for young people is to ‘be consistent and understanding’. “Take time and reflect on your life and how the people around you make sacrifices for you. They want the best for you…” she asserted.
