The management of Glengoffe High School in St Catherine said its teachers and students are struggling to cope following an incident on Sunday (September 8) in which lighting killed a male student and leaves his brother nursing injuries at Linstead Public Hospital.

The deceased is 15-year-old Jahnoy Dacres, a resident of Bamboo Ridge in Glengoffe, St Catherine. He had just moved into Grade 10 at Glengoffe High; his younger brother is in Grade Eight.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said reports from the Glengoffe Police are that, about 12:30PM, Jahnoy was picking guineps during a thunderstorm when he was struck by lightning.

Principal of Glengoffe High, Kerry-Ann Harper-Edwards, said a team from the education ministry visited the school to offer counselling.

“We are saddened. As you can imagine, it’s the start of the new school year and this is what we have to deal with. The support from the Ministry of Education has been good and they have sent out their trauma team to come in and do counselling with the students and the teachers, as well as they are visiting the home. So, they are really offering that level of support.”

The principal further stated that, based on information she has garnered, the two brothers were very disciplined.

“We know they are good students when I don’t see them. The ones that are more troublesome; I will know them right off because they come to my office constantly. Based on the report that I have gathered, they are very disciplined. We are trying to cope with the loss,” added Harper-Edwards.
