TROJA: More money needed to repair police station

Member of Parliament for St Catherine North-Eastern, Leslie Campbell, said more funds are needed to complete rehabilitation of Troja Police Station in his constituency, adding that a number of former residents and businesses are likely to return if the facility is reopened.

During the State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 1, Campbell disclosed that $8 million already has been spent on the station, which has been closed for several years.

“We are currently working with the Ministry of National Security to secure funds for the completion of the project. Upon completion, I am satisfied that we will have the return of a number of citizens who have left the community and who would feel more comfortable returning to do business and to live,” he said.

Campbell reasoned that, although crime is not a major issue in his constituency, the reopening of Troja Police Station would be a significant step towards crime prevention.

“We can all accept that crime has had a devastating effect on communities across Jamaica. Thankfully, North East St Catherine is not numbered among such communities. However, as the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Part of that prevention is the restoration of the Troja Police Station on which we have spent $8 million,” the first-term parliamentarian said.

He, during the general election campaign, listed the reopening of Troja Police Station among his main objectives. In March 2017, calls intensified for reopening of the facility after a murder was committed in Troja.

Troja residents currently depend on Riversdale Police Station, which is several miles away from their community.
