Tension in town – Two drivers killed at different locations; bus service crippled amid rumours
September 24, 2019There was widespread chaos in the Corporate Area today, September 24, following the knife killing of a taxi driver, and what is rumoured to be the reprisal killing of a bus driver employed to the state-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC).
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), in different press releases today, did not make any connection between the two killings.
In the first incident, which happened last evening, a JUTC bus driver surrendered to police after he allegedly stabbed and killed 37-year-old taxi driver Akeeno Britton, otherwise called Bubinile, from Ambrook Lane, Kingston 10.
The JCF said: “From information received, about 6:45PM on Monday, September 23, Britton was driving a Toyota Isis motorcar along Washington Boulevard in Kingston 20, when he allegedly got into an altercation with the driver of a JUTC bus.
“The situation escalated and a knife was brought into play, and Britton was stabbed several times. He was assisted to hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the JCF added.
It said the Duhaney Park Police are probing that killing, and can be contacted at 876-933-4280.
A few hours after the stabbing death of the taxi operator, a JUTC bus driver was shot dead in another part of Kingston. He is 34-year-old Mikkel Donaldson, otherwise called ‘Biggs’, from Bull Bay in St. Andrew.
The slain Donaldson is not the bus driver so far implicated in the stabbing death of the taxi operator.
The JCF, elaborating on the killing of Donaldson, said: “According to the Half Way Tree Police, about 10:24PM, Donaldson was dispatched to Oxford Road, St. Andrew, where it was reported that a JUTC bus had developed mechanical problems. It is alleged that, while he waited at the location, he was pounced upon and shot several times. He was pronounced dead at hospital.”
The police said persons with information regarding either of the incidents should call Crime Stop at 311, or police 119 emergency number.
Meanwhile, as news of the killings spread, JUTC drivers in sections of the Corporate Area today withdrew their service amid speculation that they were being targeted by killers upset over the death of the taxi driver. The bus drivers, up to publication time, were yet to resume full service.
