Teachers charged after being overpaid
May 11, 2019The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said two teachers and a salary clerk employed to the Ministry of Education are to appear in court on Tuesday, May 28, to answer to charges of Simple Larceny and Conspiracy to Defraud.
The three, who were charged by Fraud Squad detectives this week, are:
Jermaine Saunders, a 31-year-old salary clerk from St. Andrew Park, Kingston 10
Delroy Elliott, a 31-year-old teacher from Cheapside district in Walderston, Manchester
Ruel Young, a 35-year-old teacher from Morris Hall district in Rock River, Clarendon
The Fraud Squad stated that its investigation revealed that Young and Elliott were overpaid more than JA$23 million between June 2017 and August 2018.
Saunders, who is the salary clerk for both teachers, subsequently requested the return of a percentage of the overpaid monies, which allegedly was paid to him by way of cash and bank transfer.
He however failed to turn over the monies to the ministry, the Fraud Squad further alleged.
Upon the request of Fraud Squad investigators, the three men turned themselves in to police between May 7 and May 9, after which they were interviewed and charged.
They were offered bail in the sum of JA$400,000, and are booked to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
