Steer Town head boy scores big in PEP
June 25, 2019Tafari Jackson has brought pride and joy to his St Ann community of Steer Town, which usually makes the headlines for the wrong reasons.
The 11-year-old scholar, who also is Head Boy at Steer Town Primary and Junior High School, recently attained his highest academic feat yet.
He achieved the highest level of proficiency (Advanced Proficiency) in all four subjects administered at the inaugural sitting of the Primary Exit Profile (PEP). The subjects are Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.
Tafari’s placement score is 354.4 out of a maximum 400. With such an impressive performance, it is not surprising that he was given his first choice – a place at the prestigious York Castle High School in St Ann.
His mother, Kedean James, is not surprised.
“I feel overwhelmed with joy, but it did not come as a surprise, because Tafari has always been doing well. He has been an A+ student from basic school,” she told The Beacon.
Tafari, who wants to become a construction manager, also has been a permanent feature on the honour roll at Steer Town Primary.
The peer counsellor, in 2016, entered the National Reading Competition and emerged champion for St Ann in the 9 to 11 age group.
The young achiever, in the meantime, has been involved in a number of other activities, including the Spelling Bee competition and a competition hosted by the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association at schools in the parishes of St Ann and Trelawny.
From all indications, this leader and young scholar has been a beacon of hope for his school, his community and his country. Steer Town should be extremely proud!
