ST CATHERINE: Linstead youth appointed Junior Mayor

St Jago High School Deputy Head Boy Damario Patterson, who has been selected to serve as Junior Mayor of St Catherine, said his main objectives include raising awareness about climate change and helping unattached young people to make a positive contribution to society.

The resident of Orangefield district in Linstead, St Catherine, was selected by a panel on November 11 after being nominated, and after presenting a speech to the panel.

Six people vied for the post, Damario said.

He told The Beacon: “I am truly honoured to be selected to represent my parish at this level. It is truly an amazing opportunity and I look forward to all the challenges and rewards that it has to offer.

“I intend to collaborate with the junior councillors and other youth mayors to see the inclusion of our young people in effecting change across our country. I will use this opportunity to aid in the fight to get detached youths back into the system, [and] to raise awareness on the effects of climate change and what it means for our society among other things,” added Damario.

The aspiring lawyer now said he is not ruling out the possibility of a career in politics.

“With the rising need to have passionate youths involved in the process at a greater level, politics may just be in the future for me,” he posited.

Damario is an academic powerhouse, reflected in his performance in CSEC and CAPE exams, administered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC).

He, last year, achieved the best grade possible (Grade One) in 11 CSEC subjects. He subsequently attained Grade Ones in five subjects at the CAPE level.

Damario is now in Upper Sixth Form at St Jago High, where his twin brother Damary is also enrolled.

Both brothers are past students of Ewarton Primary School, and are the sons of Constantine Patterson and Olivia Williams.

Williams, in an interview with The Beacon, expressed joy that her sons have been excelling constantly.

In relation to Damario’s latest feat, she said: “I am feeling very proud; I feel blessed to know that he has reached this far. I am giving God thanks that, from a baby until now, he has achieved so much.”
