The relatively large and increasingly troubled area of Linstead in St Catherine was without a police vehicle of its own for about two weeks and was relying on a motor vehicle assigned to Guy’s Hill Police Station, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has confirmed.

The situation initially was brought to The Beacon’s attention by Councillor for the Treadways Division, Sydney Rose, who complained that the Linstead Police had no vehicle to travel to the scene where one of his employees was robbed on November 16.

When our news team made checks with Head of the Corporate Communications Unit of the JCF, Deputy Superintendent Dahlia Garrick, she confirmed Councillor Rose’s claim about the vehicle problem.

She explained that, based on information provided to her, two vehicles assigned to Linstead Police Station were out of operation.

She said one has been down for some time, and the other was involved in an accident recently.

Deputy Superintendent Garrick however stated that the Linstead Police received a vehicle last week Friday, November 22 – the day when The Beacon posed questions about the issue. The responses were provided on November 23.

Deputy Superintendent Garrick, in her response, said: “They (Linstead Police) did in fact confirm that the unit that was serving that area was in an accident and was out, and that some support was given by Guy’s Hill, but I was given the assurance that an additional unit was placed in the area [on November 22].”

Deputy Superintendent Garrick, in the meantime, stated that the police have been increasing their presence in the town of Linstead in anticipation of the yuletide season.

“They (Linstead Police) said they have plans to reintroduce some additional mobile patrol. They said, in recent weeks, they have increased the beat patrol in the township, and there should be some additional heightening of policing activities coming on now as we are about to enter the yuletide season,” she further said.
