Member of Parliament for St Catherine North West, Robert Dixon Pickersgill, is among five people awarded the Order of Jamaica – the island’s fifth highest national honour.

Pickersgill has been awarded for ‘public service and political representation’, according to a list published yesterday, August 6.

He has won seven consecutive elections in the seat, which includes places such as Linstead, Ewarton, and Lluidas Vale.

Pickersgill, a former teacher and a lawyer by training, will retire from representational politics ahead of the next general election.

He is not the only politician being conferred with the Order of Jamaica.

Member of Parliament for Clarendon Central, Mike Henry, is receiving the honour for ’40 years of distinguished public service, political representation, and public policy development’.

The Order of Jamaica also has been conferred on three non-politicians – Rita Marley, Dr Julius Garvey – son of national hero Marcus Garvey, and Chairman of Jamaica Broilers Group Robert Levy.

Levy has been awarded for ‘outstanding service to the agricultural sector and philanthropy’.

Rita Marley – the widow of Reggae icon Bob Marley – has been awarded for ‘outstanding contribution to the popularization of Jamaican music and, by extension, brand Jamaica on the world stage, and for humanitarian work through the Rita Marley Foundation’.

Dr Garvey, in the meantime, has received the Order of Jamaica for ‘distinguished contribution in universal civil activism, and promotion of entrepreneurship and the legacy of Garveyism and Pan-Africanism’.

The five aforementioned people who have received the Order of Jamaica are among 124 recipients of various national awards and honours, which took effect yesterday – Independence Day.

The recipients will formally be recognised on National Heroes Day (October 21) during a ceremony to be held at King’s House.
