No stopping grandma, who hosts 23rd treat for children in rural community

She is still hosting the Holy Thursday treat, which she and her husband started 23 years ago after they returned to Jamaica from the United Kingdom.
Although her husband Oswald Harriott died in 2012, Mrs Harriott continues to bring cheers to the children who gather at her home annually in Prospect district, Manchester.
The couple’s granddaughter, Carlene Meikle, said her grandmother hosted the latest treat last Thursday, distributing food – including bun and cheese, cakes, juices, and ice cream – to a number of children.
“The children look forward to this, and they are very excited when this time of year comes around; they also have a goody bag to take home with them,” Meikle said.
She told The Beacon that the children also participate in various games. “My nan would teach them the real reason of Easter; they also play quizzes, games, sing songs, and interact with each other.”
Meikle noted that some of the people who attended the first treat when they were children now have children attending the event.
“It has proven to be such a lovely annual event, so much so that the first children who started out with her from 1996, now have children of their own who attend too,” she explained.
Meikle said she is particularly proud to see her grandmother continuing to make a difference despite the death of her husband.
