Mobay student struggling financially to start medical school; she has 18 CXC subjectsSeptember 13, 2019
The high achieving Annalie Whyte, who hails from Bogue in St James, is now making a last-ditch effort to source funding to take up the spot offered at the University of the West Indies (UWI) to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree.
She told The Beacon that she is only now turning to the public because she was busy exhausting all private avenues.
The aspiring doctor is the holder of a whopping 18 subjects from the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC); she attained the highest grade possible (Grade One) in 17 of them.
A further breakdown of those subjects shows that Whyte left Montego Bay High School with 10 CSEC (all Grade Ones), and she recently graduated from Montego Bay Community College with 8 CAPE (seven Grade Ones).
“I am a very hard-working and persistent individual,” she told The Beacon, adding: “I have faced many financial struggles, but I have persevered and still manage to come out standing on the other side.”
Whyte, now in a most uncertain spot, noted that the monthly income in her household is approximately $100,000.
“I received an email from UWI saying that my application was processed for a self-financing spot, but I need to submit documents to prove I can pay the [annual] tuition of US$28,000 or $3,640,000 (JMD). I am unable to pay that.”
Whyte further said: “I have applied for several scholarships and even those proved fruitless; I don’t know what else to do.”
The 19-year-old scholar is not only pondering tuition; there are other annual costs – as shown below:
- Boarding: $185,000 (JMD)
- Miscellaneous: $25,000 (JMD)
- Books: $100,000 (JMD)
- Food: $45,000 (JMD)
Whyte, who explained that the Attorney General’s Department is among the many entities approached, is now hoping that the government will assist her this month through its subsidised programme.
Any other help would also be welcomed.
